What was your experience telling the children in your life about your HIV status?

Uriel's Answer

Although I raised my niece and have lived with her since she was in the womb, I have not disclosed to her about my HIV status. Angeli, my niece, has seen me however take my medication. She understands they are important to me and at times, has asked if I take them because the doctor says they will make me feel better. I tell her yes they help me stay healthy and make me feel better. I personally feel that once she is around the age of fifteen I will sit with her and explain to her exactly what HIV is and why I take my medication. I feel like fifteen would be an appropriate time to tell her because she may be exposed to the word HIV and by that time she may have gone through some Sex Ed courses in school.
